Ignite Your Faith: You Are What You Eat
You Are What You Eat
I think everyone has heard that expression.
It usually comes from a nutrition article telling us to eat more of this and less of that. After all, we all want to be healthy, right? But that saying doesn't just apply to natural food — it applies to spiritual food too.
Psalm 34:8 says: "Taste and see that the Lord is good."
We can enjoy some truly delicious food in this life. But nothing on any natural table can compare to the spiritual feast God has prepared for us. And nothing satisfies quite like the food He provides.
I love ice cream. It's rich and it's good — but let's be honest, it's not that healthy. God's Word, on the other hand, is described in Psalm 63:5 as the richest of foods — and it is healthy in every way. It shows us the path to eternal life. It gives us wisdom for our health, our marriages, our families, and every area of life. It points us toward a blessed and successful life rooted in a real relationship with God.
And Jesus Himself said it best: "I am the bread of life. No man comes to the Father except through Me — and the man who comes to Me will never hunger or thirst again." (John 6:35)
He satisfies every longing of our soul.
David knew this well.
In Psalm 23, he wrote: "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies." That same table is set for each of us — if we know Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
God has prepared a banquet for us through His nourishing Word, through fellowship with Him and with other believers, and through the privilege of fervent, heartfelt prayer. As the old song says — He's brought us to the banqueting table, and His banner over us is love. (Hymnal title: His Banner over Me is Love)
Don't settle for junk food when a feast is waiting.
What have you been feeding your spirit this week? Carve out some time today to sit at the table — open the Word, pray, and taste and see that the Lord is good.
