Ignite Your Faith: “Deconstruction” – a new word for backsliding
“Deconstruction” – a new word for backsliding
It grieves me when I hear that someone who seemed to deeply love God—someone we knew, respected, and even looked up to in our Christian community—suddenly announces “I don’t believe in Christianity anymore.”. Today, people call this "deconstruction." It's a modern term, but it describes something as old as faith itself: walking away from God.
The apostle Paul experienced this pain personally. He wrote about Demas, one of his ministry partners, who "forsook me, having loved this present world" (2 Timothy 4:10). There are countless reasons why people make this choice. In the book of Revelation, the angel speaking to the seven churches warned that drifting away from God is a constant danger we must guard against.
Satan is relentless. He'll whisper a million reasons why following God isn't worth it. The pressures of life, unanswered questions, disappointments, or the allure of the world can all pull us away.
The Secret to Standing Strong
Here's the good news: there's a powerful way to protect your faith. Stay close to God through prayer, reading His Word, and letting Scripture sink deep into your heart.
When you consistently spend time in God's Word, you can't help but be transformed by it. Hebrews 4:12 tells us that "the word of God is living and active"—it works powerfully in every part of our being: spirit, soul, and body. God's presence becomes real and tangible in your life.
The more time I spend with God, the more I relate to Peter's response when Jesus asked if the disciples would leave too: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68). When you're walking closely with God, you discover that nothing else compares.
God gives each of us the freedom to choose Him—every single day. The key to not drifting away is pressing deeper into your relationship with Him. Make time for prayer. Open your Bible and let God speak to you. Meditate on His promises. Let His truth shape your thinking.
When you do this consistently, you won't find reasons to “deconstruct”
Instead, you'll find a thousand reasons to stay.
